To Double Opt-in Or Not – List Building Tactics
The topic of whether you should have a double opt-in for new subscribers to your list comes up a lot. It's a tough issue and people do not often agree which is best.
Here is my story. The first list I started was a double opt-in list. It quickly caused me a lot of frustration as I was getting a bunch of subscribers but they were not completing the optin process. Ugghhh, I was losing leads and it hurt.
So I took the hard route, and started my list building over with a new autoresponder service. This time is was single opt-in. I soon realized that now I was capturing all of my leads BUT the quality of the folks on my list dropped dramatically. I was no longer getting the feedback and comments from my email. The conversions from my emails dropped like a meteor falls into the ocean. Great, now I had a big but mostly unresponsive list. Not exactly how I had planned it.
I never quit. So I went back to the drawing board and decided that I would give double opt-in a shot again. This time I put way more effort into the entire conversion process. I used a common theme from start to finish (ie opt-in to offer). These tweaks caused my opt-ins to dramatically increase. People were now completing the process 80% (or more) of the time.
Now, every time I get another double opt-in subscriber, I know there is a real person on the other end and it provides me with the opportunity to build a relationship.
Wow, lesson learned. Now I have the best of both worlds. I have a high quality interested group of people on my list and I am losing very few leads.
