Old People Targeted for Their Pension Money
The disgusting images of pensioners bashed and left for dead by thieves who target them is sickening. The report on local television today showed several instances where this has happened to people between the ages of 70 to 90 years. Frail, small, helpless, and going about their business it appears that those who are desperate for money to buy drugs have no qualms about hurting them.
The question is what long-term harm is done to the individuals who suffer these brutal injuries? Getting over a robbery at any age is hard but when one is in their senior years it takes a lot longer or they suffer the consequences for the rest of their lives.
Many years ago when my home was robbed by a thief who entered through an unlocked window it left me with horrible feelings. Although at the time I was in my early twenties and fit and healthy there were long-lasting effects. To begin with there was an awful empty sensation that followed because someone had penetrated my domain.
The loss of personal property played on my mind for months afterwards, even though it was not really a big deal. There is also the insecurity one feet on arrival home when the front door opens and you wonder has anyone else been there or, perhaps, is still around.
Older people have a heightened sense of insecurity because most live alone. They have to put locks everywhere, and most now have security cameras installed. But that does not remove the worry when images such as those shown on the television are fresh in your mind. Taking extra precautions and avoiding banks on pension days is a good move.
The banks in Australia are trying different things to protect the public from theft and it is costing them millions. Crime gangs also capture pin numbers and produce fraudulent cards. That means it is not only attacks in the open that worry pensioners as many have their accounts cleaned out through these methods as well. This is the age in which we live where crime has snowballed thanks to modern technology. and old folk are easy targets.
